According to a review in the New York Times from 1996, the Cerutti SS 1997 collection was inspired by Carolyn Besset Kennedy and the print was inspired by a piece of thyme that showed up in his lunch:
Liana Satenstein writes: "The designer put some fun kick into his designs: according to a piece in the December 1997 issue of Vogue, Rodriguez talks about how his lunch showed up in the collection. “[I] was served this dish with the most beautiful thyme. I was mesmerized by it.” Rodriguez then had the restaurant wrap the thyme, took the fragrant twigs with him to Paris, where he Xeroxed them, and later embroidered the perennial herb into the dresses and skirts".
